What is Capsaicin? In Which Medications is It Found?
Answer
Capsaicin is a natural compound found in red chili peppers (Capsicum species) that gives them their pungent taste. In medicine, it is mainly used for pain management. When applied to the skin, it causes the depletion of a neurotransmitter called “Substance P,” which is responsible for transmitting pain signals at nerve endings. As a result, fewer pain signals are sent, and the sensation of pain in the patient is reduced. During the first applications, it may cause burning, stinging, or a sensation of heat, but this effect usually decreases with regular use.
Medications containing capsaicin are usually available in the form of creams, ointments, sprays, or patches. In Turkey, some of the main examples sold in pharmacies include Capciderm cream, Thermo Rheumon cream, and Kapsikam cream. In addition, in some countries, medical patches containing high-dose capsaicin, known as Qutenza, are used especially for nerve pain. Capsaicin is also present as an active ingredient in some sports creams and muscle relaxant ointments.
