Eyelid Aesthetics (Blepharoplasty)

Eyelid aesthetics (blepharoplasty) are surgical procedures that correct deformities that develop over time in the eyelids. In upper eyelid surgery, excess sagging skin that restricts the visual field is removed, while in lower eyelid surgery, the fat tissue causing puffiness is adjusted. This procedure provides a younger, healthier, and more vibrant facial expression. It is not only an aesthetic concern but can also be a functional necessity. In particular, sagging of the upper eyelid may prevent full eye opening, causing headaches and vision problems. Blepharoplasty eliminates these issues, providing significant improvement in both appearance and quality of life.

The duration of an eyelid aesthetics operation varies depending on the scope of the procedure. If only the upper eyelid is treated, the procedure typically takes about 1 hour. If the lower eyelid or both upper and lower eyelids are treated together, this duration can extend to 2 to 3 hours. The surgery is usually performed under local anesthesia, but in some cases, sedation or general anesthesia may be preferred. The patient does not feel any pain during the procedure. Since the incisions are made along the natural lines of the eyelids, the scars become virtually invisible after the surgery.

The recovery period varies from person to person, but it typically lasts 7–10 days. In the first few days, swelling, bruising, and mild sensitivity may be observed in the eyelids. These symptoms usually decrease quickly with cold compresses and medications recommended by the doctor. Stitches are generally removed within 5–7 days. Most patients can return to their social life within a week. However, complete healing of the eye area, the disappearance of swelling, and the settling of the natural appearance may take 4–6 weeks. During the recovery process, it is important for patients to avoid straining their eyes, refrain from heavy exercise, and protect their eyes from sunlight.

The eyelid aesthetics operation is performed under local anesthesia or sedation. Small incisions are made along the natural crease of the upper eyelid and parallel to the lash line of the lower eyelid. Excess skin, fat, and muscle tissue are removed or reshaped through these incisions. The eyelid is tightened and given a more aesthetically pleasing form. The incisions are closed with fine stitches, which gradually become almost invisible. Patients can usually be discharged on the same day. The surgical technique may vary according to the patient’s needs; in some cases, only the skin is removed, while in others, muscle tissue is also corrected. In lower eyelid surgery, fat tissue is usually not completely removed but redistributed to prevent puffiness.

Eyelid aesthetics prices vary depending on the scope of the procedure, the equipment and facilities of the hospital or clinic, the city, and the surgeon’s experience. As of 2025 in Turkey, the cost of a single eyelid procedure ranges from approximately €800 to €1,300, while performing both upper and lower eyelid surgery together can reach €1,000–€1,500. These amounts may be higher in private clinics. The most important factors determining the price are the surgical techniques used, the type of anesthesia, and the quality of the facility where the surgery is performed.

There is no strict age limit for eyelid aesthetics. It is generally preferred by people over 30, when age-related sagging begins. However, due to genetic factors, eyelid problems can occur at younger ages, and the procedure may be suitable for these individuals. Ideal candidates are those who experience sagging, puffiness, or restricted visual fields, are in good overall health, and have realistic expectations. Individuals with chronic conditions should always consult their doctor before surgery.

Eyelid aesthetics, when performed solely for cosmetic purposes, is generally not covered by insurance in public hospitals. However, if sagging of the upper eyelid significantly restricts the visual field or causes a functional problem, eyelid surgery can be performed under health insurance in public hospitals. In such cases, the procedure is considered “functional surgery,” and the patient either pays nothing or a minimal fee. For cosmetic-only procedures, private hospitals and aesthetic surgery clinics are usually preferred.
